Eric Hernandez as Manville HS Senior
(Click on picture to go to Courier coverage)
Officer Eric Hernandez Shooting - NYC (Midnight, 1/29/2006)
Officer Henandez was a 1999 graduate and star football running back at Manville
High School.
This 'friendly fire' case looks to be shaping up as a major incident. The original
NYT story, which is here, led with his 'apparent' intoxication, and only in the 7th
paragraph do we learn that the young man he had on the ground says he never
heard the police give a warning before shooting Hernandez.
The Courier ran the AP story, which gives a lengthy rendition of the incident as it
unfolded, only mentioning in the 10th paragraph the hospital tests which verified
the officer's intoxication.
A story to run in Monday's Times reports he is still in critical condition, and that
conflicting versions of the incident are emerging from witnesses. Monday Ledger
story is here. Monday Courier story is here.
One Plainfielder, an African-American whose brother is an NYPD officer, commented
that the perception is that a badge is a 'license to shoot Blacks and Hispanics first and
ask questions later,' and that fear of this kind of 'friendly fire' is why his brother transferred
out of undercover and back into the uniformed service.________________________
